“Since when do they just let them wander around?” and other assorted tales to be told around the Samhain fire.

Thirty three years ago tonight, HE escaped from the sanitarium to return home. HE came home …to kill. The little child that had “the blank, pale, emotionless face, and the blackest eyes, the Devil’s eyes,” was no longer a child.”What was living behind that boy’s eyes was purely and simply… evil.” That evil boy had grown up, he was a man…and he had escaped.

Not only did it introduce us to: Michael Myers, Dr. Sam Loomis, Sheriff Brackett, Annie, Lynda, and Laurie it also instilled the idea of a character who was never seen. We only hear a portion of his story, but it was enough to stick with us. His name was Charlie Bowles, and he was mentioned in a throw away line in the cemetery by the graveyard keeper. “You know every town has something like this happen. I remember over in Russellville, old Charlie Bowles, about fifteen years ago. One night, he finished dinner, and he excused himself from the table. He went out to the garage, and got himself a hacksaw. Then he went back into the house, kissed his wife and his two children goodbye, and then he proceeded to…” And that was it. Loomis cut him off before we could find out what had happened.

That is just one of the cool things about this movie, it is just a classic through and through. For me, it is very difficult to believe that this film came out 33 years ago.

Anyway, Happy Halloween, Happy Birthday Michael Myers, We miss you Donald Pleasence, Debra Hill, and Moustapha Akkad.

If you happen to see an old Station Wagon with a guy in a white mask driving it, just keep going and don’t look back, especially if it has the sanitarium insignia on the door.
